A Suitable Bride

A Suitable Bride -video installation (2018) is a joint work by Jaakko Pesonen and Sampo Marjomaa. The installation contains a dialogue between Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) and a fictive contemporary media persona. Tesla was a Serbian-American engineer, inventor and futurist. The eccentric genius had a non-conformist view of the universe and life. Towards the end of his life, Tesla lived in Hotels in New York, fed pigeons, cared for the sick birds and fell in love with one of them.

”I have been feeding pigeons, thousands of them for years. But there was one, a beautiful bird, pure white with light grey tips on its wings; that one was different. It was a female. I had only to wish and call her and she would come flying to me. I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me. As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life.” (Nikola Tesla)

The media-persona in the work questions Tesla’s views on the universe and love. The relation between human and machine has changed how we see ourselves and others. Has this relation also changed the essence of love?

The installation consists of:

-a bridal chest which contains all the hardware of the installation, including a miniprojector which projects video onto the mini mac which runs the installation,
-three screens, two facing each others and one to be viewed from outside the gallery
-two speakers
-a curved balck curtain

The installation has been exhibited:
